GOOD LABORATORY PRACTICES

Always save your files in your personal directory only

Delete the program files downloaded immediately after installation

Do not save the experiment page or any other practical page [please note that this computer is used by others also]

If you were absent for any of the earlier practical, do not copy the record page from others. Do the experiment yourself and write the Record. Now links to all previous experiments are available in the "PRACTICAL ZONE"

Do not read news papers, open social networking sites in this computer

Do not pass on the password supplied to you to unauthorized persons

1. Install and practice Bioedit

2. Exploring major databases: Genbank/DDBJ/ENA(EMBL)

3. Understanding DNA / Protein coding system

4. Exploring genome-specific databases (Mouse / RAT/ Rice / Arabidopsis)

5. Dot-matrix comparison of sequences

6. Exploring protein sequence databases

7. Pairwise alignment of DNA / protein sequences using Needleman and Wunch algorithm

8. Pairwise alignment of DNA / protein sequences using Smith and Waterman algorithm

9. Exploring EST sequence and Clustering databases

10. Exploring gene databases

11. Exploring Genome variation resources

12. Database searching using rigorous Smith and Waterman algorithm

13. Understanding "Database searching by FASA algorithm"

14. Understanding "Database searching by BLAST algorithm"

15. ORF Finding using NCBI ORF finder and Bioedit

16. Microbial gene prediction using Glimmer

17. Eukaryotic gene prediction using Genscan

18. Functional annotation of predicted eukaryotic genes by homology searching protein and EST databases

19. Understanding multiple sequence alignment by Clustal-W tool (progressive alignment algorithm)

20. Editing and Analyzing multiple sequence alignment using Genedoc tool

21. Visualization of protein structure: Download, install and practice Rasmol, the protein structure visualization tool

22. Prediction of protein secondary structures

Instructions regarding your Record

Bioinformatics practical record: you have to create a record of what you are doing in the practical. For this do not buy any commercially available records, Please buy a folder (file) and white papers (bond paper). Every day what you are doing in the practical has to be recorded in these sheets. You have to submit the record of each experiment in the next practical class.  At the end of the semester, you can bind these papers with a cover page (which I will design)
